Healthy Happy Holidays

If you’ve ever tried to adhere to a “diet” during the holidays, this time of year may fill you with dread. Food is often the centerpiece at family gatherings, and it’s a rarity that healthy or food allergen friendly options are available. Luckily, this doesn’t mean you have to go off the rails at your next work Christmas party, or feel left out when everyone is indulging in Aunt Gertrude’s famous pecan pie. The key to surviving the holidays without taking several steps back health wise is simply moderation! We’ve created our top 3 tips to keep you on track for the remainder of 2018.

  1. Bring something to the table! Instead of relying on everyone else to provide a food option that works for you, volunteer to bring an item or two that you know you can have all you want of. Whether it’s a salad with some Primal Kitchen dressing or a gluten free version of stuffing, this will ensure that you have food available and that you won’t go hungry! The ultimate in bringing something would be to nominate yourself to be the host- we promise no one will even notice that the pumpkin pie is made with honey instead of cane sugar.
  1. Ask others to provide something healthy! If you’re flying in the day of Thanksgiving, it might be tough for you to provide a food option. In this case, ask the host if they would mind providing a few things that are on your “can do” list. As long as you aren’t asking them to make a completely separate chocolate trifle, we are willing to bet they will be more than happy to make you happy.
  1. Allow yourself a little indulgence. If you’ve never gone a single Christmas without your favorite fruit cake, that’s ok- who are we to suggest breaking tradition? Rather than consuming the entire fruitcake, perhaps a small slice will suffice this year. We promise no one will notice, and they’ll probably even be glad there’s more for them!
